Trains & subways

Optimizing rolling stock operating costs and improving safety and passenger services are major challenges for operators. To meet these challenges, the number of on-board electronic devices has increased considerably in recent years, as has the volume of data to be transported. WiFi has rapidly established itself as a reliable, high-performance solution enabling operators to achieve several key objectives.

Automatic loading/offloading of data at stations or depots

The integration of advanced electronic equipment and WiFi enables more efficient management and reduced operating costs. Operators can automatically load and offload data at stations or depots, eliminating the need for numerous manual interventions and reducing downtime. What’s more, predictive maintenance based on data collected in real time helps to anticipate and prevent breakdowns, thus reducing repair costs and service interruptions.
For metro systems, this mainly involves the massive downloading of on-board videos.
Broadband connection is also used to upload on-board software updates from the ground to the rolling stock (MRO).

Real-time data transfer from train to ground

Safety is a crucial aspect of rail transport. Thanks to WiFi, train data, passenger intercom, passenger information, passenger counting and CCTV images can be transferred in real time to the centralized control station (OCC) via the ground multiservice network (MSN). This enables constant, proactive monitoring, increasing the ability to react in the event of an incident. Information on the status of on-board equipment (including rolling stock TCMS) and maintenance alerts can also be transmitted instantaneously, enabling rapid, targeted intervention.

Enhanced passenger services

Passengers benefit directly from the improvements brought about by the use of WiFi and advanced electronic equipment. Passenger Information Systems (PIS) can be updated in real time, providing accurate, up-to-date information on schedules, connections and possible delays. In addition, on-board WiFi allows passengers to stay connected, which has become an expected and appreciated service, enhancing the overall travel experience.

ACKSYS Communications & Systems has been a pioneer in rail WiFi, developing high-performance roaming solutions. Its WiFi access points have proven their performance and reliability on trains and subways worldwide, used both on-board (EN 50155) and on the ground (EN 50121-4). This range has now been completed by LTE 4G and 5G cellular routers dedicated to rail, offering even more robust and extensive connectivity. On-board LTE radio equipment is used in particular on metro lines (RER) and regional trains (TER).
